Here are some of our favorite resources for preparing your work for publishing.
You probably already have an automated solution for proofreading, the most basic level of editing that typically involves checking for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Copy editing is a more in-depth level of editing that also looks for style errors and may also make suggestions for improving the clarity and flow of the document.
Content editing is the most comprehensive level of editing and involves checking for all of the errors mentioned above, as well as making suggestions for improving the overall structure, organization, and content of the document. Content editors may also rewrite or restructure sections of the document as needed.
Today's automated solutions are great for proofreading, and increasingly add AI components for more in depth copy and content editing suggestions. - Grammarly - Established proofreading software that can be used as an app plugin or browser extension. generally considered to be more user-friendly than other apps. Recently added an AI component for advanced editing. Offers a limited free plan and monthly subscriptions.
- ProWritingAid - Proofreading assistant with browser and app integration, and an AI compent for advanced suggestions. Provides a more complex interface, but offers more comprehensive writing advice. Offers a limited free plan and monthly subscriptions.
- Brainwave Editor - Inexpensive AI-based editing with per document pricing if your manuscript is in markdown or plain text format.
Professional services for editing may also provide additional services like printing, publishing, cover design and marketing.
Academic Publishing
LaTeX is the de facto standard for academic publishing, especially for scientific and technical journals. Many journals provide .sty files to readily format your paper for publication. Here are some resources for getting started with LaTeX:
